Community Advocate & Prevention Specialist Position

 

SAFE San Juans (SSJ) seeks to fill a Community Advocate & Prevention Specialist Position on San Juan Island to serve San Juan, Orcas, and Lopez Islands:

​

SAFE San Juans is a community-based non-profit agency providing professional Washington State-certified domestic violence (DV) and sexual assault (SA) client services to all of San Juan County.

Under supervision and direction from SAFE San Juans Program Manager, this staff member will be responsible for providing support for survivors and secondary victims of DV and SA. They will also deliver prevention education in county schools. As a Community Advocate, they will provide initial and on-going safety planning; medical, financial, and legal advocacy. This staff member will be required to gain a comprehensive working knowledge of Washington State and Federal laws as they pertain to the rights and responsibilities of services for clients in DV and/or SA situations, to include issues associated with immigration status. They will staff offices with other advocates and be part of the on-call rotation for SAFE San Juans 24-hour crisis hotline. Coordination with other systems as appropriate, provision of community outreach, prevention and education as assigned by the Program Manager or Executive Director are included.

This position will also include the role of Prevention Specialist. This staff member will be asked to:

Deliver DV & SA education & prevention activities in the schools and community that meet the developmental needs of adults & families; Create/obtain research-based DV & SA prevention materials; Cultivate working relationships with public and private-school personnel to schedule and implement age-appropriate research-based DV/SA prevention programming.

This position is a minimum of 28 hours/week (M-Th) and requires weekly inter-island travel (ferry expenses are paid for by SSJ).

​

Required Qualifications for this position include:

​

  • A personal commitment to serving the needs of survivors of domestic violence & sexual abuse

  • A commitment to SAFE’s empowerment-based, client-directed approach to service

  • Completion of WA State and agency trainings in providing services to survivors. SSJ will pay for and send the Community Advocate to these trainings after employment begins

  • Flexibility with respect to changes in job duties & the responsibilities of the position, including availability to work some weekends and evenings

  • Legal residency is required

  • Live on San Juan Island
